Twins on favorable side of blowout

Published: Apr 30, 2009 6:48 AM

The Twins have had a few blowout wins this year, but a majority of the lopsided games this season have come at their expense. On Wednesday night, I was a little worried with Scott Kazmir on the mound for the Tampa Bay Rays. The Twins usually don't fair well against left-handed pitching, and Kazmir has had success against the Twins in a limited number of past starts.

The Twins came out attacking Kazmir early though, with 4 runs right away in the first inning. They added 1 in the third and 3 more in the fourth, which finally ended a rough night for the starter.

The 2009 Minnesota Twins

Compared to last season, not a lot changed for the Twins this past winter. Last offseason saw the loss of Johan Santana and Torii Hunter as well as a trade that sent Matt Garza and Jason Bartlett to the Tampa Bay Rays for Delmon Young and Brendan Harris. This offseason's biggest move was the signing of Joe Crede, who comes into the season still trying to shake off any doubt about his health.

Let's take a position-by-position look at where the Twins stand in 2009 compared to 2008.

Late lead slips away

Justin Morneau's slump has possibly come to end. He hit his first home run of the season, a 3-run blast in the 4th inning, and later provided an RBI double. That gives him 3 hits and 5 RBI in the past two games.

The Twins offered Mike Lamb a 2 year $6.6 million contract to man third base in 2008 and 2009, with a $3.5 million club option for 2010. Will they get their money's worth on this deal? Let's see:

2008 Projection: Adam Everett

Initially it was thought that Brendan Harris would replace Jason Bartlett at shortstop following the trade with Tampa Bay, but shortly after that the Twins signed free agent Adam Everett to fill that void. Let's look at his numbers. They're scary, so proceed at your own risk.

2008 Projection: Brendan Harris

We've covered a couple familiar offensive faces, now onto one of the new offseason acquisitions, Brendan Harris. Harris was acquired in the trade the sent Matt Garza and Jason Bartlett to the Rays for Delmon Young and Harris.

Nathan signing and some roster trimming

Joe Nathan The speculation of the weekend culminated in Monday's official announcement by the Twins that they have signed Joe Nathan through 2011 with a team option for 2012. For a team who's recent history has been to let star players go when they enter their most expensive years, this should come as a pleasant surprise. It's really hard to get too upset over this; every fan wants their team to retain its best players.

Garza - Young deal almost done

A huge trade with the Tampa Bay Rays appears to be imminent. The reported trade would send Matt Garza, Juan Rincon and Jason Bartlett to Tampa Bay in exchange for 22-year old former first-round pick Delmon Young, Brendan Harris and former Twin prospect Jason Pridie.
