Sunday night’s bizarre game included 10 total runs in the first inning, a lot of shaky defense and even a triple play. It was probably the most dissapointing loss for the Twins all year considering that they were handed a 7-3 lead after the first inning.

Carlos Silva got roughed up for 3 runs in the first inning. It would’ve been more like 5 or 6 runs had he not had the spectacular plays of Torii Hunter (robbed homerun) and Luis Castillo (running down flyball in shallow right along foul line) to help him out. The game got off to a terrible start, but all that changed in the bottom of the inning. Shannon Stewart started things off with a single. Luis Castillo then grounded a perfect double-play ball back to pitcher Marke Beurhle, but Beurhle threw it away. Mike Redmond singled to score Shannon Stewart. The inning should’ve ended once again on a Torii Hunter double-play gounder to shortstop, but that was booted, allowing Castillo to score and giving Twins runners on 1st and 2nd. Michael Cuddyer singled to load the bases for Justin Morneau who hit a sac fly to tie the game. Rondell White then came up with a big double off the baggy to give the Twins the lead.

At that point Beurhle was getting hit pretty hard. Tony Batista doubled and Juan Castro singled. Shannon Stewart hit his second single of the inning to score the 7th run of the game. That would be all the runs the Twins would score.

Immediately after Redmond popped out to end the first inning I thought to myself, “Does Silva have to come back out?” He did come back into the game but only lasted another 1 1/3 innings before giving up the lead. Luis Castillo did make a throwing error in the 3rd which would’ve been a double play, but that doesn’t discount the fact that Silva was hit pretty hard. I’ll be pretty upset if Silva gets another start with the Twins. Leaving Silva in the rotation for another start would be disrespectful to the better pitchers that are waiting for an opportunity and to the fans who expect to see a competitive team. Unfortunately, I’m bracing myself for dissapointment.

The bullpen did an adequate job in the game for the Twins, and although the offense didn’t do much of anything after the 1st innings they did produce 7 runs against one of the better pitchers in baseball. Take Silva out of the equation and this would’ve been a Twins victory.
