Twins take rare loss with Santana starting Twins 4 at Indians 5 September 15th, 2006 at 11:30 pm
Santana was on the mound for the Twins on Friday night, and for many that’s all you need to know to realize what the outcome of the game will be. When Santana pitches, it’s usually a win, but not on Friday night. Johan got hit around early. He gave up a 2-run homer in the first and also allowed a run in the second and fourth innings. After that he was back to his dominant self. Santana faced the minimum in the fifth through eighth innings.
The Twins offense should take most of the blame for this loss. They were given 8 walks by the Indians but managed just seven hits and could score only 4 runs. Struggling pitcher, Fausto Carmona, held the Twins hitless through the first three innings. He finally left after five innings having given up 2 runs.
The Twins mounted a comeback in the ninth of Cleveland’s bullpen but were only able to tie it and send the game into the 10th. Luis Castillo nearly started an amazing double play in the 10th inning, but Bartlett’s through sailed up the line at first allowing Franklin Gutierrez to score the winning run.
Game Notes
- Michael Cuddyer was 2-4 with a run scored
- Justin Morneau drove in 2 RBI. He had a couple hard hit balls stolen by second basemen Joe Inglett
- Dennys Reyes struggled with his control again. He through a wild pitch in the 10th which took away the double play and forced them to walk bases loaded.
- Neshek gave up the leadoff double in the 10th and took the loss.
The Central race
Detroit clobbered Baltimore by a score of 17-2 to increase their Central lead to 2 games. Chicago lost to Oakland which keeps them 2 games behind the Twins. The Yankees won their sixth straight as they seem to be running away with the home field advantage in the AL.
