Twins sweep the Braves Braves 2 at Twins 3 June 14th, 2007 at 11:30 pm

Even after 16 years, the baseball gods refuse to allow the Atlanta Braves to win in the dome. It looked like they had the victory pretty much wrapped up on Thursday night as they headed into the bottom of the ninth with a 2 run lead. Although Johan Santana had pitched a pretty good game, Tim Hudson was even better. He shut out the Twins through 7 1/3 innings pitched and was inexplicably pulled in the eighth despite throwing just 84 pitches.

That decision to pull Hudson may have been exactly what the Twins needed. In the ninth inning the Twins put together a few hits against Bob Wickman and were helped by a crucial Atlanta error. Luis Castillo led the inning off with a single and Joe Mauer’s groundout advanced him to second. Michael Cuddyer then trippled to cut the Braves lead in half. Justin Morneau, of all people, got an infield single which set up runners at the corners.

On the next play Torii Hunter grounded too third base and Cuddyer could’ve easily been dead on arrival at home. The throw sailed over Brian McCann’s head and allowed the game to be tied and allowed Morneau and Hunter to both move into scoring position. Mike Redmond finally delivered the game winning single.

Game Notes

  • Santana moved back into the AL strikeout lead with 9 K’s. With his 3 walks allowed he ended up throwing 108 pitches through 7 innings. Sadly, he had another quality start without getting the win. His record remains at 6-6.
  • Dennys Reyes made his return from the DL and pitched a scoreless ninth. He was credited with the win.
  • Jason Kubel also returned to the lineup and was hitless in 3 at-bats.
  • The Twins had just 6 hits in the game, including 2 from Luis Castillo.

Detroit lost allowing the Twins to move within 3.5 games of them, while Cleveland held its 5.5 game lead over the Twins.
