Twins suffer Bronx blowout Twins 1 at Yankees 10 September 3rd, 2006 at 11:30 pm
It couldn’t have been a good sign for the Twins that Bert Blyleven was cursing before the game even got underway. In a way, the Twins television booth has resembled what’s gone on with the Twins over the last month or so—both are battered with injuries personell problems. Bert was away last week due to Ernesto, then Dick missed the weekend series due to his mother’s funeral. Now Bert faces a two game suspension for his elicit language in the pre-game show on Sunday.
Now to the game. Matt Garza struggled through 4 2/3 innings of the game. He gave up 5 runs on 7 hits and most damaging, 4 walks. The Twins staff walked 7 Yankees on the day on their way to a 10-1 loss. Garza, Eyre, Neshek and Rincon each faired equally bad against the Yankees.
The offense continued to be flat as well. Guys that were lighting up the ball two weeks ago have all flattened out at the same time. Nick Punto’s average is just about under .300. Joe Mauer’s average is under .350, and Morneau and Bartlett aren’t playing at the same level they were (which was to be expected). Throw Luis Rodriguez into the mix and you’ve got a pretty bad lineup.
Game Notes
- Torii Hunter hit his 23rd homer of the year and second of the series for the Twins only run.
- The Twins were out-hit 14-5.
- Darrell Rasner, making his first start as a Yankee and second start ever, picked up the win.
Does anyone want to win?
The White Sox lost again on Sunday to drop the series to the Royals. The Tigers were also defeated by the Angels. The Twins remain 1/2 game behind the ChiSox and 5 games behind Detroit.
The Twins start a 3-game series against Tampa Bay on Monday. Detroit will host Seattle and the White Sox will be in Boston.
