Twins lose in 13th after comeback Blue Jays 9 at Twins 8 May 26th, 2007 at 11:30 pm

The Twins offense impressively took back Toronto’s five run lead by scoring 2 runs in the eighth and 3 runs in the ninth. The fought threw 13 innings, but in the end they came up just a bit short and the Jays won 9 to 8. The large deficit, not surprisingly, was the result of Ramon Ortiz.

Ortiz allowed 10 hits through 6 innings and was responsible for 6 of Toronto’s 9 runs. It actually could’ve been much worse considering he magically worked his way out of a based loaded with no outs jam in the 3rd. With a 3-0 count Troy Glaus gave him a gift double play ball and then Ortiz got a fly ball to end the inning.

With recent call-ups Julio DePaula and Carmen Cali looking terrible in the game it seems that now is a perfect opportunity to move Ortiz and his $3 million salary to the bullpen and send DePaula back to Rochester. Ortiz has allowed 40 hits and posted an ERA near 11 through 21 1/3 IP in the month of May. By himself he’s costing the Twins games, and there’s no reason to keep the failed experiment going.

Michael Cuddyer helped carry the offense with 5 RBIs, including a 2-run homer in the eighth. It was the highest single-game RBI mark of his career and it put his season total at 36. Justin Morneau also pitched in with 2 hits and 2 RBI.

Game Notes

  • The Twins had 3 baserunners thrown out in the game. Cuddyer and Nick Punto were thrown out at home and Torii Hunter was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.
  • The entire Twins bullpen was used in the game. Matt Guerrier ultimately got the loss after allowing a run in the 13th.
  • Jason Miller saw his first big-league action in the ninth inning and couldn’t have had better results. He struck out the first batter he faced and went on to complete a perfect inning.

The Twins dropped another game to Cleveland who has now taken down Detroit in the first two games of that series. The Twins deficit in the Central slipped to 7.5 games. Carlos Silva will try to win the Twins’ third straight series and more importantly eat up a lot of innings to give the bullpen a rest.
