Francisco Liriano got his first start of the season for the Twins Friday night, and he met expectations with a nice five inning outing as he works to build up his endurance. Liriano wasn’t given a whole lot of breathing room, but the Twins offense scored just enough runs just in time for Liriano’s departure after 5 innings.

Playing under National League rules, Liriano actually had an opportunity to help himself in the 2nd inning following leadoff walks to Lew Ford (HBP) and Tony Batista. Juan Castro then grounded into a double play which moved Ford to third. Liriano, the ninth batter came up and knocked Lew Ford with a basehit to left. In the third inning walks got the best of Liriano as he started off the inning with 2 walks. He worked out of the jam though and only surrendered the one run on a sacrifice double play.

In the top of the 6th Michael Cuddyer hit a big solo homerun to put the Twins in the lead and set Liriano up for the victory. The close game ended up looking lopsided due to a 5 run 8th inning involving a bases loaded hit by pitch to Lew Ford and a follow-up Tony Batista grand slam.
