The Indians scored 5 runs off Johan Santana and the Twins were forced to go 10 innings to pick up the win. The Twins jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with 2 runs in each of the first two innings. The Indians scored two runs in the 5th and three runs in the 6th. Batista made a throwing error resulting in 1 of the 5 runs to be unearned. The Twins tied the game in the bottom of the 6th on a Tony Batista GIDP that scored Justin Morneau from third.

Santana exited after 7 innings and Rincon pitched a scoreless eight inning. Joe Nathan was brought into the tied game and simply dominated the 9th and 10th innings. He didn’t allow a baserunner and struck out 5 of the 6 batters he faced. In the bottom of the 10th Torii Hunter picked up a 1-out walk and Cuddyer singled him over to third. Justin Morneau won the game with a RBI sac fly.

Game Notes

  • Cuddyer, White and Castro each had 2 hits.
  • How much longer must Lew Ford bat leadoff? What will Gardy do when Kubel starts in left instead of Ford?
  • It was good to see Nathan used in an important non-save situation. It probably has more to do with the fact that Nathan isn’t getting save opportunities than that Gardy has just realized that Nahan is the best pitcher in the bullpen and should be used as such.
  • Jason Kubel, who was just recalled, was asked to hit in a tough spot in the ninth. He pinch hit for Juan Castro to lead off the ninth and struck out. He’ll likely start tomorrow.
