Twins 15, Rangers 5 Twins 15 at Rangers 5 May 9th, 2006 at 10:56 pm
Since the 1-0 loss to Kansas City last Thursday, the Twins offense has shown strong signs of improvement. Most notably, they’re getting hits from guys in the middle of the lineup like Torii Hunter and Michael Cuddyer. Tuesday night, Justin Morneau joined in the fun while contributing 2 homers and 6 RBIs to the Twins 15-5 trouncing of the the Texas Rangers. A little more than a month ago the Twins scored more runs in a game than they did in all of 2005 with 13 runs against Toronto. Tonight, they even surpassed that.
Tonight proved what this team can do when the middle of the lineup produces. Hunter batted cleanup and was 3-for-5 with a walk and 2 RBIs. Cuddyer batted fifth and was also 3-for-5. And of course Morneau had a big night with 3 hits and the previously mentioned 2 homers and 6 RBIs. Even Rondell White managed to get 2 hits. Shannon Stewart and Tony Batista both had the day off which provided for a different batting order. Luis Rodgriguez played 3rd base and batted leadoff while Ford played left and batted 8th. Cuddyer seems to have won Gardy’s confidence enough to get the everyday RF job.
On a negative note, Carlos Silva was pretty ineffective again tonight. He gave up 11 hits, 2 of which were homers, in his 6 innings of work. 9 of his outs were fly outs compared to 8 groundouts. That’s not good for a supposed sinker-ball pitcher.
Game Notes
- Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. Luis Castillo and Juan Castro were the only two that didn’t get more than 1.
- Liriano finished out the game with 3 innings of scoreless pitching. He threw 46 pitches. Are they starting to ready him for a spot in the rotation?
- Morneau took the team lead in homeruns (8) and RBIs (23) with his big day. That’s a pace of 39 homers and 113 RBIs. Now if he can just get on base a little more often and improve some against left-handed pitching.
- Cuddyer is now batting .343 and has a 1.054 OPS – almost 3 times that of Rondell White’s.
