Tigers 9, Twins 6 Tigers 9 at Twins 6 May 5th, 2006 at 11:30 pm
The Twins lost their 4th straight game against Detroit Friday night at the dome. The Twins offense was surprisingly affective against Kenny Rogers. Rogers has built a reputation of being a Twins killer, so it was great to see not one but several innings in which the Twins managed to score against him. Unfortunately, Kyle Lohse struggled again, banishing any chance the Twins might of had at winning the game.
Lohse made it into the 5th having given up 5 runs already. He wasn’t able to retire a batter in that inning though and Matt Guerrier came in for relief. Both of Detroit’s fifth inning runs were charged to Lohse giving him a line of 4.0 IP, 9 hits, 1 walk, 7 ER. Through 6 starts this season Lohse has a 9.71 ERA and has pitched 6 innings only twice. He has never pitched more than 6 innings in a game this season. He’s walked more batters than he’s struck out. How much more patience will the Twins have with this $4 million dollar #4 starter?
Guerrier came in and pitched 3 good innings and it even looked like the Twins might be able to crawl back into the game after Torii Hunter hit a solo homer in the 5th and the Twins scored another run in the 6th to make it a 7-6 game. Even Jesse Crain pitched a scoreless inning in the 8th. Joe Nathan, who hasn’t had many save opportunities this year, was brought in for some work in the ninth. He started out the inning by givine up a triple Ivan Rodriguez. He ended up giving up 2 runs, putting the Twins hopes of a 9th inning comeback to rest.
Game Notes
- Hunter was 2-for-3 with a walk and a homerun in the game. He now leads the team with 7 longballs.
- Mike Redmond had another good day with Joe Mauer having the day off. He was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored
- Michael Cuddyer had a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He played first in place of Justin Morneau. I wouldn’t mind seeing Cuddyer get more games at first when the Twins face lefties.
- Lew Ford was 0-for-4. I was again left wondering why he’s batting fifth in the lineup.
- Luis Castillo was back in the lineup after gettin spiked on Thursday night. He went a rare 0-for-5 at the plate.
