Taking a few days off Blue Jays 5 at Twins 8 June 28th, 2007 at 11:30 pm
Just a quick note, that I’m gonna be taking the weekend off from the blog. Be sure to check up on the Clubhouse for all the great Twins coverage it has to offer.
Thursday’s game featured a nice Twins’ comeback after a rough first inning for Carlos Silva. Frank Thomas got his 500th career homerun right away in the first inning. Silva settled in to allow just 3 hits and a run after that first inning. He completed 7 innings to get his sixth win of the season. Silva has had run support his last two times out with 19 combined runs from the Twins.
Jason Bartlett and Torii Hunter were the offensive heroes for the Twins. Bartlett hit his second homer in the third inning and had 2 stolen bases in the game. He’s now a perfect 15 for 15 in steal attempts and leads the team in steals.
Justin Morneau surprised everyone by returning to action in the game. I didn’t expect him to return until the weekend. He started out with strikeouts in his first two at bats, but later drove in a run on a sacrifice and also walked. Morneau was the DH with Michael Cuddyer still playing at first.
Game Notes
- Jason Tyner led off for the Twins and batted leadoff and went 3 for 4. He’s got his season average up to a respectable .291.
- Juan Rincon pitched a scoreless 8th
- Joe Nathan got his 15th save of the season
Detroit and Cleveland both won their games on Thursday.
Garza recalled
After the game the Twins decided to recall Matt Garza from AAA Rochester to add a 12th pitcher to the roster. Chris Heintz was sent down. Garza will pitch out of the bullpen before making a spot start next weekend in the Twins’ double-header in Chicago.
I would assume the plan is to eventually send him back down when the need for a 12th pitcher is no longer present, but you never know what can happen between now and the All-Star break.
