Silva roughed up by KC Royals 6 at Twins 4 September 27th, 2006 at 10:08 pm
Carlos Silva’s ineffectiveness on Wednesday night cost the Twins another loss against baseball’s worst team. In Silva’s final start of the season he saw he ERA jump back over the 6.00 mark. If there’s any positive you can take from it, it’s that Silva is even more unlikely to win a spot in the postseason rotation. He shouldn’t even make the roster. Kansas City has been a much tougher opponent for the Twins than they should’ve been this year. The Twins have just an 11-7 record against the .373 Royals.
The Twins bats continued to struggle against baseball’s worst All-Star, Mark Redman. Redman shutout the Twins on August 29th and he pitched 8 strong innings on Wednesday night. Gardenhire gave a couple of the regulars the night off which didn’t help their offensive chances much either. Lew Ford got the start in RF and which pushed Cuddyer into the DH spot. Luis Rodriguez started at second in place of Luis Castillo.
Game Notes
- Morneau and Hunter were a combined 0-7. Hunter left early after fouling a ball off his toe. As always, he’ll be fine.
- Joe Mauer doubled and reached on a bunt to go 2-4 and bring his average to an even .350. With 4 games left the batting title is looking pretty likely.
- Rondell White was 2-3 with 2 RBI. After Mauer failed to score from third on a passed ball with 2-outs White came up with a clutch 2-run double to wipe out Mauer’s mistake.
- Guerrier, Eyre and Rincon combined to give up 1 run in 5 inning of relief.
- Silva allowed his 38th and 39th homers of the season.
Wild Card seems likely
Detroit lost to the Blue Jays so the Twins didn’t lose any ground however they failed to move into a tie. Because the Tigers win the tie-breaker the Twins need to pick up 2 games to win the division. With 3 of Detroit’s 4 remaining games against Kansas City, it’s unlikely that the Twins will be able to overtake them. The Tigers have won 14 of 15 against Kansas City this year.
