Silva, Eyre dig early hole Twins 4 at Rangers 9 July 7th, 2006 at 11:30 pm
Carlos Silva threw batting practice to a pretty good Texas lineup for the first 1 2/3 innings of Friday night’s series opener. It was actually pretty incredible that he only allowed two runs in the first inning; he left two runners in scoring position in the innings. Silva had three more runs charged to him in the 2nd inning, and left with a strained right knee. Whether it was an injury or an “injury” isn’t much of a concern for me. As long as it keeps him off the mound for a while, I’ll be satisfied. There were some grumbles earlier this week over Kyle Lohse being the likely candidate to take Boof Bonser’s spot in the rotation instead of Bakers. Sooner or later they might both be there.
Willie Eyre came to relive Silva and was equally as bad. He allowed 2 inherited runners to score and was charged with a run of his own in the 2nd inning before finally getting the final out. Eyre retired only one batter in the 3rd and allowed two more runs before exiting. Kyle Lohse pitched a quality 3 2/3 innings and newcomer Pat Neshek gave up only 1 ht in two innings pitched; not a bad big league debut.
Solo homeruns by Mauer, Kubel and Morneau provided most of the Twins’ offense. Morneau also hit an RBI double in the third scoring Cuddyer. Morneau continues to be on a tear and he actually pushed his batting average over .300—something I didn’t expect to see from Morneau at this point in a season.
Game Notes
- Castillo and Punto were each 2-5 at the top of the order, but neither factored into any run scoring.
- Morneau hit his 23rd homerun of the season and got his 72nd and 73rd RBI. He’s now passed his season total from last year in homeruns and is just shy of his 79 RBI from 2005.
Liriano and Santana
The Twins will finish out the first half with Liriano pitching Saturday night and Santana going on Sunday, so they hope to finish on a high note after losing 3 straight.
