Shut down by Wakefield Red Sox 2 at Twins 0 May 4th, 2007 at 11:30 pm
The Twins failed to score a run against Tim Wakefield and the Boston bullpen of J.C. Romero, Brendan Donnelly and Jonathon Papelbon. The story Friday night wasn’t so much about missed opportunities as it was lack of hits. The Twins managed just four hits on the night and additionally had three batters reach on walks.
Carlos Silva is getting close to forcing me to write an apology letter. He continues to go out and give quality starts and Friday night’s game was hit best of the season. He allowed just five hits to a potent Red Sox offense with the only damage coming from a sixth inning solo homer by David Ortiz. After that home run and the follow-up double by Manny Ramirez I was beginning to worry that things were about to bust open for the Sox, but Silva got out of it without more damage and even pitched a quick seventh.
Juan Rincon’s struggled in the ninth inning and allowed an insurance run on 3 hits to the Sox. Despite his low ERA, he’s allowed a lot of baserunners with 13 hits and 8 walks in only 11 2/3 IP.
Game Notes
- Torii Hunter extended his hitting streak to 19 games with 2 hits.
- Joe Mauer and Jason Bartlett had the other two hits (both doubles) for the Twins.
- Justin Morneau nearly homered in the bottom of the ninth (would’ve been a solo shot), but it was caught against the wall by Coco Crisp.
- Torii Hunter was caught stealing on a knuckle ball from Wakefield in the second. He later succeeded in the seventh.
- Morneau, Mike Redmond, Jason Kubel and Josh Rabe batted back-to-back of each other and combined to go 0 for 13. Furthermore, Luis Castillo and Nick Punto went 0 for 8 at the top of the order.
The Red Sox appear to be overmatched for Saturday night’s game with Johan Santana going against Julian Tavarez. The Twins are just 1 game over .500 and need to get back in the W column in this game.
