Rough spring start Red Sox 6 at Twins 1 March 5th, 2007 at 12:16 am
There’s not much to say about spring training on a day by day basis, especially at its outset. Pitchers are just getting their first couple innings, none staying around longer than 2 innings and in many cases players are left behind and saved the bus ride for those one day road trips. So far, there’s not much good to say about the Twins since games began last Wednesday.
The Twins have played 5 games and sit with just a tie and four losses. Wins and losses are pointless in the spring, but the Twins seems to be making a habit of slow starts. They’ve had virtually no offense to this point, scoring just 9 runs while giving up 35. Following is some notable information from the first five spring games.
- Scott Baker has been terrible. He’s had 2 appearances and given up a total of 9 earned runs. After a couple years of struggles at the major league level, Baker might be running out of chances with the Twins as the new young crop of Garza, Bonser and Slowey begin to emerge. It’s only 2 outings, but Baker’s leash wasn’t long to begin with.
- If Carlos Silva is worth the $4.5 million he was paid to return, then he certainly didn’t prove it with his rough first outing, a 2 inning 5 run effort.
- Mathew Lecroy has led the team in at bats with 11, but hasn’t done anything impressive with just 2 singles, a walk and a team leading 4 strikeouts.
- Sidney Ponson hasn’t seen any action yet, but will start in Monday’s “B” game against the Red Sox.

Well, look at that…Silva just pitched three scoreless innings (1 hit) in his start today against the D-rays. The Twins go their first victory of the season, 4-2.
