Rookie Sowers shuts out Twins Twins 0 at Yankees 11 July 22nd, 2006 at 11:30 pm

A month ago Jeremy Sowers wasn’t even in the big leagues. Since being called up and making his debut start on June 25th he’s also been less than spectacular. He came into Saturday night’s game with an error of 5.56 and a 1-3 record. He was also just coming off a bad start against the Twins earlier in the week. He was a different pitcher on Saturday night. He allowed just 4 hits and a walk in the complete game shutout and he got plenty of run support.

Scott Baker looked ok until he got the sixth inning when he gave up 3 runs and allowed the Cleveland lead to extend to 6 runs. Travis Hafner also hit his 6th homerun against the Twins this season in the first inning to give the Indians an early 2-0 lead. Willie Eyre got roughed up in the 9th inning—allowing 5 runs.

Willie Eyre has had three straight horrible outins, and he wasn’t even very good before that. His season ERA is now at 7.84 and it’s time for him to go back to the minors to get some work in. Matt Guerrier has started a rehab assignment and he will be a welcomed addition when he returns to the bullpen.

Game Notes

  • The Twins didn’t get one extra base hit in the game.
  • Kyle Lohse pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings between Baker and Eyre. His ERA is now below 7.

Sunday

The Twins will look at Francisco Liriano to get them back on track on Sunday. The White Sox lost on Saturday, so the Twins are still just 3 games behind in the wildcard race. The Yankees moved within 1.5 games of the White Sox.
