Offensive slump continues Twins 1 at Angels 5 June 5th, 2007 at 11:30 pm
Less than a week ago it looked like the Twins’ season was turning around. They had won 5 straight and 8 out of 9 and were slowly closing the gap between them and the division leading Indians. Now they’ve suddenly lost 4 straight on their west coast road trip as their offense has managed just 6 runs in the four games. They’ve had two complete games thrown against them. One came on Saturday by Joe Blanton and most recently on Tuesday night against Kelvim Escobar.
With John Lackey on the mound Wednesday afternoon it looks very much like a sweep could be in order for the Twins. Kevin Slowey, the last Twins pitcher to win, will try to end the skid, but he’s going to need more than 2 runs of support from his offense.
Fortunately it looks very much like Joe Mauer will return to the lineup on Friday. As I speculated a couple weeks ago, Mauer may also slide into the #2 spot, a spot the Twins haven’t found anyone to adequately fill.
Offensively, the Twins managed just 3 hits against Escobar and were helped with only a few walks. The lone run came on a fifth inning Torii Hunter home run, his second in as many days.
Scott Baker had another rough outing. He allowed 5 runs on 8 hits over 5 2/3 innings. The Angels’ runs were scattered over 4 different innings.
Game Notes
- The bullpen pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball with Matt Guerrier leading the way with just a hit allowed in 1 1/3.
- Jason Kubel was 1 for 3 and has hits in 3 straight games.
- Jason Tyner was the DH again and had 1 of the 3 hits for the Twins.
- Lew Ford, who did not play, has just 1 start and 6 at-bats so far in the month of June.
The Twins have now fallen below .500 again at 28-29. They trail Cleveland by 7.5 games.
