Offense still missing White Sox 3 at Twins 0 May 10th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

The Twins have now been shut out twice in their last six games and have averaged just 2.5 runs/game over that same span. Coming into the season, it was thought that the success or failure of this team would depend on the starting pitching. So far it’s been the bats that have dragged this team back down to a .500 record at 17-17. Jose Contreras went the complete game for what was by far his best start of the season. Contreras allowed just five hits

Carlos Silva wasn’t great, but he pitched well enough that a win would’ve been likely with a decent offense. Carlos Silva has been the starter for all three of the Twins’ offensive shutouts this year and in all 7 of his starts the Twins have scored an average of just over 3 runs per game. Silva’s record dropped to 2-3 with his ERA rising slightly to 3.00 after allowing 3 runs through 6 innings.

The Twins’ first hit came in the third inning on a Jason Kubel double. Two batters later Jason Bartlett grounded a ball to the left side and Kubel made the mistake of running to third. He was easily tagged out to eliminate any scoring chance that may have existed. Kubel ended a 5 straight strikeout streak with the double and he did later get a single too. Torii Hunter’s 23 game hit streak also came to an end with an 0-4 game at the plate.

Game Notes

  • Dennys Reyes had a good relief outing. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and only allowed a hit while striking otu two.
  • Pat Neshek pitched 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief while striking out 3.
  • Nick Punto hit leadoff and went 0 for 3 with a walk to drop his season average to .228.
  • Jason Tyner’s stats are also taking a dive with just 1 hit in his last 18 at bats.

Detroit won their series with Seattle and have won 9 of their last 10. They’ll come to the dome for the weekend with a 4.5 game lead over the Twins.
