No Run Support for Boof Twins 0 at Athletics 4 June 1st, 2006 at 11:25 pm

Boof was hurt by the 3 homeruns he gave up in the game, but overall he pitched pretty well. He gave up just 2 other hits and didn’t walk any batters. Zito, however, shut down the Twins offense, allowing just 4 hits and no walks.

With only 12 total baserunners by both sides, the game finished up in a quick 2 hours. Joe Mauer kept his hot streak up by going 2-4 which raised his batting average to .362. That was enough to move ahead of Alex Rios for the MLB lead.

Game Notes

  • Cuddyer is beginning to slump along with the offense. He was 0-4 today.
  • The Twins got two runners (White and Batista) on base with 1 out in the fifth. The batters due up were Juan Castro (.235) and Lew Ford (.227). They’re not going to score many runs when they face situations like that. Castro ended up hitting into a double play to end the inning.

Baker Sent Down

Scott Baker, as expected, was sent to AAA Rochester after his poor start against the Angels earlier this weak. The Twins will reduce their pitching staff to 11 guys and slide Carlos Silva back into the rotation. I’m not sure Silva has done enough to convice me that he’s ready to roll, but he’s the best option we have so I’m all for giving him another shot. After rumors that Shawn Wooten would be called up to take Baker’s roster spot, it turned out the Twins will actually call up Terry Tiffee. I was pretty upset with the idea of Wooten being called up, but I like the idea of Tiffee being recalled. Tiffee is a third basemen, so at worst the move will put a little pressure on Tony Batista. At best, Tiffee will have more success than he had last year when he was up and will give the Twins reason to part ways with Batista. Tiffee can also play some first base and the Twins currently don’t have a good option to back up Morneau.

I’m still waiting for two more moves to be made:

  1. Call up Jason Bartlett to start at SS. Tiffee will be the backup (or starting) third basemen so Luis Rodriguez can be sent down (unless they want to get rid of Batista).
  2. Play Jason Kubel every day, either in LF or DH (taking at bats away from Rondell White).
