Nathan blows a save in crazy loss Twins 3 at Devil Rays 4 May 2nd, 2007 at 10:53 pm
This was a game I only saw bits and pieces of, and I missed the 9th and 10th innings, so I’ll definitely have to go back and watch the archived game from MLB.tv.
From what I hear the roof of Tropicana field played a role in two plays. I saw the first one in which the ball went up and never came down. It was called a foul ball, and from the conversation of Dick and Bert it probably should have been a Tampa Bay double. The one I didn’t see came in the 10th when apparently Carlos Pena singled off the catwalk. If anyone saw it, I’d appreciate details in the comments.
Joe Nathan blew his first save of the season and it appears Tampa Bay has his number this season. Nathan nearly blew a game at the dome against the Rays, but was bailed out by a Carl Crawford base running blunder. By the way, Crawford, made another terrible base running play on Wednesday night in which he ran from first to third on a outfield pop out and was easily doubled up to end the third inning.
Game Notes
- Torii Hunter provided the first 2 runs for the Twins with a 2-run homer in the second that extended his hit streak to a new career best 17 games. He had 3 hits in the game.
- Boof Bonser allowed just 1 run through 6 innings, but still walked too many (4).
- Cuddyer missed the game after bruising his back on Tuesday night. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau batted back-to-back in the 3 and 4 spots for the first time in quite some time. Mauer was 1 for 5 with an RBI and Morneau had 2 hits.
On the farm
Matt Garza struck out 9 batters for Rochester in an afternoon game against the Columbus Clippers. He allowed 2 runs on 6 hits through 6 innings of pitching.
