Morneau injured in loss Twins 4 at Marlins 5 June 22nd, 2007 at 11:30 pm

Morneau collides with Olivo The Twins tied the Marlins 4-4 in the eighth, but it came with a huge cost. Scott Ulger initially held up Justin Morneau on a Jason Kubel double to left, but when Josh Willingham had trouble fielding the ball in left he sent Morneau home. The ball beat Morneau and he was forced to collide with Miguel Olivo who was blocking home plate. Olivo missed the ball, Morneau was safe and even Kubel came around to tie the game. Morneau was slow to get up though and came out of the game after that inning.

Morneau left the stadium after the game coughing up blood. He spent the night in the hospital and will likely miss at least the remainder of the series with a bruise on his lung. Morneau will be evaluated by a Marlins physician on Saturday.

Ron Gardenhire fessed up to making what would be a game losing mistake. Juan Rincon, who has struggled in his last two starts, was left in for the eighth after pitching a scoreless seventh.

“It’s not Juanie’s fault; I should have had my pitcher [Pat Neshek] ready,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. “I got kind of caught up in the Morneau situation. Normally in that situation, I go to my submariner [Neshek] and didn’t get him ready in time because of the other situation. StarTribune

Game Notes

  • Boof Bonser gave up 4 runs in 6 IP as he continued to struggle with the command of his fastball.
  • Torii Hunter led the Twins with 3 hits. He and Morneau each had an RBI.
  • Jason Kubel got the pinch-hit double in the eighth inning. Both runs were scored on the error by Olivo.
  • Jeff Cirillo got another start at third base and made a nice one handed pick up and throw early in the game. Jason Bartlett played at SS.

Kenny Rogers is back

Kenny Rogers made his season debut on Friday night against the Braves and allowed just 2 hits in 6 innings. The Tigers may have just gotten a whole lot better overnight, which is scary for a Twins team that trails the Tigers by 6.5 games right now.

The Indians lost on Friday night to the Nationals by a score of 4-1 to drop a game behind the Tigers.

Could you get your facts straight? Not once did I hear from news reports that Morneau would likely miss the rest of the season.

Paul, I never once heard that either and I certainly didn't report, mention or even think that.

I believe you misread my line that says, "…will likely miss at least the remainder of the series with a bruise on his lung."
