Mariners 1, Twins 5 Mariners 1 at Twins 5 May 2nd, 2006 at 10:20 pm

Tuesday night’s game went a little more as scripted than the past week’s games have gone for the Twins. Johan Santana had another excellent start. He went 7 innings and struck out 9. He gave up 1 run on 6 hits and no walks. Santana got off to a rough start giving up hits to the first three batters he faced. However, he kept the damage limited by striking out the next three batters. It was pretty much smooth sailing from that point on for Santana. His high pitch count in the early innings limited him from going more than 7 innings. Rincon pitched the eight and Nathan came in for the ninth.

Outside of the 2nd and 8th innings, the Twins offense was pretty quiet, but the 4 run 2nd inning was enough to lock up the victory. Lew Ford and Justin Morneau each singled to start off the inning. Tony Batista drove in Lew Ford for the first Twins run. Next, Rondell White finally was able to get a basehit by doubling in Justin Morneau. Nick Punto kept the scoring going with a bloop single to bring in Batista. The 4th run came when Shannon Stewart grounded into a double play, scoring White. The Twins added one more run in the 8th on a Torii Hunter groundout.

This was the final game with Seattle, and the series ended in a 1-1 split. The Twins will hope to start a winning streak tomorrow against the Royals.

Game Notes

  • Twins pitching has not walked a batter in the last two games. Monday night it was because everything was hit by Mariners. Tonight it was because Johan was good.
  • Nick Punto got the start and was 1-for-3 at SS tonight. Juan Castro has been struggling at the plate and he looked terrible in the field last night. However, this was just a day off and he’s sure to be back at SS tomorrow.
  • Rondell White has been hitting the ball hard again. He started out the season hitting the ball hard but right at people. Then he fell into a slump where he wasn’t even making solid contact. The past couple games he’s back to hitting the ball hard at people. He was finally able to pick up a double in this game. He was 1-for-3 in the game.
  • Johan Santana improved to a 2-3 record and dropped his ERA below 4 to 3.89.
