Liriano's start short but sweet Twins 3 at Indians 1 July 23rd, 2006 at 11:12 pm
Liriano got off to an incredible start on Sunday in Cleveland. Through 4 innings he had struck out 9 batters and had a 3-0 lead. He looked unstoppable. However, he ran into some trouble in the fifth and allowed 1 run to score and threw a lot of pitches while working out of the inning. The Twins went to the bullpen in the sixth.
As it has been most of the past two months, the bullpen was impressive. Pat Neshek pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. He walked 1 batter but allowed no hits. Reyes and Rincon each pitched 2/3 of an inning and Joe Nathan got his 19th save of the year in the Twins’ 3-1 victory.
The Twins bats were pretty silent with the exception of the 3rd inning. Jason Tyner singled on a botched bunt that landed between the pitcher and second baseman. After two outs were made Nick Punto also bunted for a hit to put runners on first and second. Joe Mauer was walked intentionally and Micheal Cuddyer hit a single to score the first run. Justin Morneau then poked a single through the left side to score the Twins’ other two runs of the game.
Game Notes
- Justin Morneau now has 80 RBI on the season.
- Joe Mauer reached base in all four of his at bats. He had 2 hits and 2 walks.
Brad Radke to retire
Sid Hartman wrote Sunday that Brad Radke plans to retire after this season. This isn’t a huge surprise as he had talked about retiring previously and this is the last year of his contract. Radke is still feeling pain in his shoulder and, according to the story, would need offseason surgery if he decided to continue pitching past this season. Radke is just 33.
