Liriano struggles in opener Indians 6 at Twins 4 July 13th, 2006 at 11:30 pm

Liriano had his worst start of the season on Thursday night which ultimately led to a 4-6 loss in the series opener to Cleveland. The Twins have now lost two straight games in which Santana or Liriano started. Some of made the excuse that he struggled do to all the travel in the past few days. That’s possible, but it’s also possible that he just didn’t have a good start. All pitchers struggle from time to time, especially 22 year olds.

Liriano struggled through five innings and gave up five runs (four earned), five hits and three walks. It was only his second loss of the season and his ERA jumped to a still league leading 2.12.

The Twins bats can also be blamed for the loss. They didn’t get a hit off starter Cliff Lee until the fifth inning when they were already down five runs.

Game Notes

  • No Twin batter had more than 1 hit. Castillo, Punto and Mauer each reached base twice with a single and a walk each.
  • Justin Morneau got his 74th RBI of the season on a sac fly in the 6th.
  • Kyle Lohse pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief.
  • Lew Ford suffered a strained oblique while batting late in the game. With Kubel now suffering from sore knees the Twins infeild is started to thin out. Jason Tyner was called up to take Lew’s spot on the roster. Tyner should be able to fill Lew’s hole just fine, if not better.

Breaking up the lefties

As expected, Brad Radke will get the start on Friday for the Twins with Santana following up on Saturday. Gardenhire has been wanting to break up Santana and Liriano in the rotation.
