Leeewwww Indians 2 at Twins 3 August 4th, 2007 at 11:30 pm
Lew Ford was optioned to AAA Rochester after the game Saturday to make room for Carmen Cali in the bullpen. Lew emerged with the Twins in 2003 and was an every day player in 2004 and 2005, but has declined dramatically from the mediocre numbers he put up those two year. Lew has been a fan favorite, if for no other reason than his name, so the move is surprising in that one aspect–you don’t expect a guy that’s been around for 4 years to get sent down.
Jeff Cirillo was also lost on Friday when the Arizona Diamondbacks claimed him off waivers. Again, not much of a loss, but it certainly wasn’t a predictable move.
The Twins’ 3-2 victory over the Indians on Saturday moved them to within 5.5 games of the now division leading Indians. The recent poor play of the Tigers and Indians have helped the Twins stay within contention despite playing .500 baseball. I’d like to think they have a chance, but with their pathetic offense it’s more likely that the Indians or Tigers (or both) get back on track and pull away from the Twins than it is that the Twins put any type of run together.
Game Notes
- Matt Garza struggled to complete 4 innings, but somehow managed to wiggle out of jams and allow just 2 runs.
- Ramon Ortiz pitched 2 scoreless innings and picked up the win. Nevertheless, I don’t like seeing Ramon in close games, but I understand that when the starter only lasts 4 innings, there aren’t many other options.
- Michael Cuddyer had been a nice addition to the lineup since returning from the DL on Friday. After picking up 2 hits on Friday he tied the game on Saturday with a double in the 4th and drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice.
- Joe Mauer pushed his average back to over .300 with a 2-4 day at the plate.
