It's sad, really Twins 14 at Royals 3 August 5th, 2006 at 11:26 pm
It’s really pretty sad to watch the Kansas City Royals play. Their pitching has walked 34 batters in three games so far which has allowed the Twins to come within a game of sweeping the 4 game series, despite the Twins not playing so well upon coming to Kansas City. The Royals also don’t seem to have a bright future. They don’t have a good core of young players that they’re looking to to bring them out of the cellar in the next couple years. Of course, playing the Royals couldn’t have come at a better time for the Twins.
The Twins have been suffering from a battered rotation over the past week. On Sunday Mike Smith will make his first major league appearance since 2002 when he was with the Blue Jays. Johan Santana hasn’t had his typical second half so far (although Friday’s would’ve been pretty good minus the fourth inning). Francisco Liriano also missed his last start with a sore forearm, but he’s going to be back for the Twins’s series in Detroit on Monday.
Sunday’s game was a blowout for the Twins. They scored one run for each walk they got, that’s 14, and also had 12 hits. Carlos Silva picked up another win as he continues to look better. He had a 14-4 groundout-fly outs ratio which is usually a good indicator of how Silva is doing. He did, however, give up 2 homerun in the sixth inning, but by that point the game was already in the bag.
Game Notes
- Punto, Mauer and Kubel each walked three time
- Luis Castillo was 4-6 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI
- Jason Bartlett was 3-5 with 3 runs and 2 RBI. He’s batting .357.
- Carlos Silva now has an 8-9 record to go along with his 6.37 ERA.
- Torii Hunter has a six game hit streak since returning from the DL on July 31st.
Morneau piling up RBI
Morneau has had 3 RBI in each of the three games in the series. He also had the homerun on Friday night. On the season he has 29 HR and 97 RBI. He’s on pace to get 144 RBI which would make him the all-time Twins leader in single season RBI. Harmon Killebrew is the current leader at 140. He’s also just 1 long ball shy of that elusive 30 HR milestone. He’ll be getting a nice raise in the offseason.
