Hunter's the Hero Twins 8 at Red Sox 2 September 20th, 2006 at 10:18 pm
For a little less than an hour the Twins felt what it was like to lead the Central division. While the Tiger-White Sox game was in progress the Twins and Tigers had equal records of 90-61. The Tigers finished off a 6-2 victory, so the chase will continue for another day.
Boof Bonser turned in another great start on Wednesday night. He allowed David Ortiz’s 50th homer of the season and it looked like his night might end in a 2-1 deficit. Just in time the Twins offense exploded for four runs in the eighth. Cuddyer led off the inning with a hustle double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Justin Morneau took a walk. Torii Hunter has been on fire lately, especially in important situations. He continued that with a 3-run blast to put the Twins in the lead.
The Twins added 3 runs in the eighth to result in a pretty lopsided score. The Red Sox loss allowed the Yankees to clinch the Eastern division title.
Game Notes
- Torii Hunter had 4 RBI in the game. He has 28 homers and 90 RBI on the season. 100 RBI is a stretch, but 30 homers is a real possibility. Torii’s career high for homers was 29 in 2002.
- Joe Mauer was 2-5 with 2 runs scored. He’s managed to keep his average hovering in the low .340s.
- After a long RBI drought, Michael Cuddyer drove in his 101st. He got his 100th on September 14th in Cleveland.
Looking for the season sweep
It’s been said that the Twins turnaround began with their sweep of Boston in mid-June. Depending on what happens tomorrow the Twins could take the Division lead as they finish off a season sweep (6-0) of the Red Sox. The Tigers will play a make-up game in Baltimore. The Twins will send Johan Santana to the mound.
The Twins are also just 1 1/2 game (1 loss) behind the Yankees for best record in the AL. The White Sox may as well start planning their offseason vacations.
