Eighth Inning Comeback in KC Twins 5 at Royals 3 July 3rd, 2006 at 11:30 pm
Most people expected the Twins to win this game, but the win came in an unexpected way. Johan Santana gave up 5 runs and the Twins found themselves down 5-3 going into the eighth. The game started off well with Justin Morneau hitting a 2-run homerun in the second and Joe Mauer hitting a solo shot in the sixth.
Everything fell apart for Johan in the sixth though. Santana walked two batters and gave up a single before then hitting Mark Teahen with a pitch to allow a run. Angel Berroa’s bases clearing double put the Royals up 5-3.
The Twins came back with 3 runs in the eighth to take the lead for good. Luis Castillo and Joe Mauer walked and with 2 outs Morneau hit a single to score Castillo. A wild pitch scored another run to tie the game and put Morneau at third. After bases were loaded, another wild pitch scored Morneau to put the Twins ahead.
It wasn’t the prettiest game, but the Twins came out ahead for their 11th victory and 19th win in 20 games. Detroit and Chicago both lost allowing the Twins to move within 9 games of Detroit and 6.5 of Chicago.
Game Notes
