Double Plays Hurt Twins Twins 2 at Royals 7 July 4th, 2006 at 11:14 pm

The eleven game winning streak came to an end Tuesday night in Kansas City. Boof Bonser struggled with his command and gave up 4 runs in the third inning before being replaced in the fourth by Kyle Lohse. Lew Ford’s 2-run homer provided the only runs for the Twins as just about every rally the Twins got started was killed by a double play. The Twins hit into three double plays in the loss.

Ron Gardenhire also threw a different lineup out on the field for the game. Joe Mauer, Luis Castillo and Jason Kubel got the day off and Torii Hunter hit in the DH spot. The fact that some of the players are a little beat up and the Twins were facing a lefty contributed to the second-class lineup. The Twins got out to an early lead with Ford’s 2-run homer in the 3rd, but Boof gave up the lead with the help of 3 straight walks in the inning.

Kyle Lohse did a good job in relief. He gave up 1 run in 4 innings of work and got a little bad luck with a bloop hit that scored the one run. He kept the Twins within reach, but Willie Eyre gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the eighth.

  • The Twins hadn’t scored fewer than 3 runs since their June 6th 4-2 loss in Seattle.
