Brewers offense bashes Twins Brewers 11 at Twins 3 June 15th, 2007 at 11:30 pm

Scott Baker’s start was going along just fine through the first three innings. It looked like he might repeat the success he had in his season debut in Milwaukee last month when he came just shy of a complete game. It all fell apart in the fourth inning though when Geoff Jenkins hit a grand slam over the baggy to put the Brewers ahead 4-1.

Baker ran into trouble again in the fifth inning and it became time for Ramon Ortiz to suck for the remainder of the game. Ramon allowed 5 runs in his 4 1/3 innings and the Twins went on to an 11-3 loss.

In addition to Jenkins, Prince Fielder also did his damage against the Twins. After Jason Kubel and Justin Morneau each hit homers in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to bring the Twins to within 3 runs, Fielder his a 2-run blast in the seventh.

The Twins anemic offense put up just 5 hit against starter Claudio Vargas and were then completely shut down by reliever Brian Shouse who earned a 3 inning save.

The loss ended the Twins’ 3-game winning streak and perhaps killed the new-found hope that some people had in this teams’ chances of getting back into the playoff hunt. Sure, it’s just one game, but it’s also another game where the offense couldn’t get anything going.

Game Notes

  • Kubel hit his fifth homer of the season and third in the month of June.
  • Morneau hit his 19th of the season
  • After starting off brilliantly in Milwaukee last month, Baker has taken a dive. He hasn’t pitched 6 innings since then and has a 9.64 in those 4 starts. Baker has been a disappointment, but I hope they stick with him a couple more starts at least.
