Blue Jays power past Twins Blue Jays 8 at Twins 5 June 25th, 2007 at 11:30 pm

Kevin Slowey allowed 2 homeruns and 5 total runs through 5 innings on Monday night as the Blue Jays edged the Twins by a score of 8-5. The Twins had been 4-0 in Slowey starts before the game.

Slowey allowed just 6 hits and didn’t walk a batter, but the homeruns certainly hurt him. The Twins managed to come back and tie the game on two occasions, but the Matt Stairs 2-run homer in the eighth off Matt Guerrier sealed the win for the Jays.

The Twins were the first to score when Mike Redmond delivered a 2-out single to drive in Torii Hunter. After Slowey allowed 3 runs the Twins matched the score in the fourth with a Michael Cuddyer walk, a Hunter double, a Kubel RBI sacrifice and finally another Redmond RBI single.

The final two runs for the Twins came on a wild pitch by Roy Halladay. With Joe Mauer at the plate the ball got away from Greg Zaun and allowed Luis Castillo to score. In an attempt to get Castillo, Zaun threw the ball past Halladay to allow Jason Bartlett to score the tying run.

During the play, Halladay, stepped on Castillo’s hand as it crossed the plate. The grimace on Castillo’s face made it seem like a serious injury, but Luis stayed in the game until he was pinch-hit for in the ninth. The Twins planned to wait it out and see how it felt today. With an already thinning roster, the Twins don’t need Castillo to miss any games.

Game Notes

  • Juan Rincon pitched a scoreless 6th inning in a tied game. Ron Gardenhire has expressed confidence in the righty despite poor outings in the past week.
  • Jason Bartlett had 1 hit in the #2 spot of the lineup. He also improved to 12 for 12 in the stolen base department. He trails Nick Punto by 1 for the team lead.
  • Jeff Cirillo followed up a 0-5 day on Sunday with an 0-3 day at the plate Monday. He also is apparently feeling soreness in his knee according to Gardy’s post-game interview.
  • Jason Bartlett had a web-gem nominee with a diving stop to his right and a strong throw to first. Nick Punto also made a nice play as he jumped up against the wall above the dugout to catch a fly ball.
