Baker good enough for win Devil Rays 3 at Twins 6 July 17th, 2006 at 11:30 pm

Scott Baker wasn’t perfect in his return from Rochester, but he pitched just well enough to pick up the win. Baker gave up 3 runs through 6 innings—good enough for a quality start. The Twins’ bullpen was perfect to finish out the game. Pat Neshek, Juan Rincon and Joe Nathan each pitched 1-2-3 innings in order. The victory moved the Twins within 6 games of the wildcard, but they still have two other teams wedged between them and the White Sox—Toronto and New York.

The offense came primarily from Justin Morneau and Rondell White. In the fourth inning Morneau hit a 2-run single and White hit a sacrifice groundout. White added 2 big insurance runs in the 8th with a 2-run single with 2 outs. White has been productive since returning from the DL, but not to the point where I’m convinced he’ll keep it going. With the exception of the homerun on Sunday White hasn’t really hit the ball hard.

Game Notes

  • Scott Baker improved his record to 3-5.
  • Morneau was 3-4 to improve his average to .310. He also picked up his 76th and 77th RBI of the season.
  • Nick Punto left the game with a jammed knee, but is expected to be ok.
  • Joe Mauer, who had been slumping since the break went 2-3 with a walk and 2 runs scored.
