Baker gets a win Twins 6 at Mets 2 June 20th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Scott Baker picked up his first victory since his season debut on May 19th in Milwaukee. He was pulled after five innings in favor of a pinch hitter after pitching two scoreless innings. The pinch hit move ended up paying off as the Twins expanded the lead from 3-2 to 6-2 in that inning.

Baker wasn’t spectacular, he allowed 7 hits and 2 runs, but he didn’t walk anyone and he did a good job of minimizing the damage. He pitched well enough to keep his job, but I have a feeling his back is still up against a wall.

The Mets actually out-hit the Twins, but the Twins got the timely hits (and the help of 6 walks) while the Mets squandered opportunities.

Oliver Perez’s downfall was the five walks he allowed. The Twins’ first run of the game was scored on a Justin Morneau triple after Michael Cuddyer got his second walk of the game. Joe Mauer led off the fifth inning with a walk and later scored on Torii Hunter’s 2-run homer. Those first 3 runs were all scored with 2 outs.

The Twins padded their lead in the sixth when Mike Redmond got a pinch hit single to drive in Lew Ford. Mauer doubled later in the inning to drive in the Twins’ final two runs of the game.

Game Notes

  • No Twins had more than 1 hit. 5 of the 7 hits were extra base hits though.
  • Jeff Cirillo started a second straight game at 3rd base. Nick Punto played at SS in place of Bartlett.
  • Hunter and Morneau are now tied for the team lead with 56 RBIs a piece.
  • Luis Castillo ended and 0-21 slump with a double to lead off the game. It was his only hit.

You can pretty much stick a fork in the White Sox who dropped to 10 games under .500 after losing again to Marlins. The Tigers and Indians both won and remain atop the division by 5.5 games over the Twins.

The Twins will have an off day on Thursday before heading to Florida for the weekend.
