Athletics 5, Twins 6 Athletics 5 at Twins 6 April 12th, 2006 at 11:44 pm
I wasn’t able to catch much of this game, so my notes will be a little limited on this one. I’ll be watching the archived game on MLB.tv before I go to bed tonight. Please leave some comments if I left something important out.
For the second straight night our starter (Carlos Silva) went 7 innings. He didn’t have particularly great numbers, but luckily the bats were there to pick him up. As usual, Silva gave up no walks in the game. He gave up two homers to Nick Swisher, but they were just solo shots (proves how important it is not to walk batters).
The Twins bats continued to be resilient. In all three wins this season the Twins have started out with considerable deficits. Justin Morneau hit another homerun, a 3 run blast in the 3rd. He got down in the count 0-2 quickly but then took two balls, fouled off a pitch and then went deep. Just for fun I’ll note that Morneau is on pace to hit 81 homeruns this season.
Torii Hunter also had a nice offensive night going 2 for 3 with a homerun. He also drew a walk and had 3 runs scored. The biggest event of the night though was seeing Batista continue to hit the ball well. I know it’s just been a couple good games, but right now I feel a lot better about Batista than I did a week ago. I’m not quite sure what he was doing in the second when he got thrown out stealing 3rd. He either got a terrible jump or just thought Kendall wasn’t paying attention to him. Kendall had the ball when Batista broke for 3rd. The only thing that made the play somewhat close was that Chavez was a little late in getting to the bag. It likely ended up costing the Twins a run as Kubel walked and Castro singled after he was thrown out.
Rondell White continued to struggle, going 0-for-4 tonight. It’d be really nice to see him bust out of that slump soon. In the one at bat of his that I saw, he did hit the ball pretty deep to the outfield, so I think a big part of the slump is just bad luck. Imagine what this offense could do with some production from the #4 spot.
After not seeing much action in the first two series of the season, Nathan is started to get some serious save opportunities (2 1-run games in a row). He was virtually perfect in the 9th today, striking out 2.
After getting swept by Cleveland this past weekend, nothing could be better than finishing off the series with a sweep tomorrow before heading into what’s sure to be fun series against the Yankees.
Lastly, I want to comment on how I dislike the new uniforms they were sporting tonight. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but get some damn sleeves. They, however, are not as bad as the red uniforms they wore on Sundays several years ago.
