5 hits for Morneau Twins 7 at Red Sox 3 September 19th, 2006 at 9:17 pm
Morneau’s power numbers have dropped off over the past month (just 1 in September), but he’s still hitting the ball. Morneau entered the game batting .354 in September and went on to a 5-5 night with 2 doubles. Morneau may not be a national favorite for MVP, but if his September ends like it started it’s going to be hard to ignore him in consideration for the award. Morneau drove in 1 run and scored twice as the Twins won the opener in Boston by a score of 7-3.
Matt Garza pitched well before running into some trouble in the 6th inning. He walked a few batters and had a few hit hard off him, but overall he did what the Twins wanted him to do; he gave them a chance to win. The bullpen pitched through a night of rain and worked out of a couple jams to keep the Twins in the lead.
Game Notes
- Luis Castillo was 3-5 as he continues to make a push for .300 before the season is up.
- Torii Hunter hit his 27th homerun in the 3rd inning. Hunter left the game early after fouling a ball off his ankle. It was a scary moment as he stayed down on the ground for about a minute, but it seems like he’ll be fine.
- Jason Bartlett his his second homer of the season off Wakefield in the 2nd. Wakefield did not look good in the game and lasted just 3 1/3 innings.
The White Sox have a 7-0 lead over the Tigers in the eighth inning, so it seems likely that the Twins will move to within just 1/2 game of the Tigers (tied in the loss column) and will retain a 4 1/2 game lead over the White Sox in the wild card. The Yankees are defeating the Blue Jays in the ninth, so the Twins won’t pick up any ground on them for the best AL record.
