What's happening in spring training March 4th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
I thought I’d interrupt the steady stream of projections posts to recap what’s been happening down in Florida.
Today’s game against Tampa Bay was cancelled due to rain after almost 5 innings were played. Boof Bonser tossed three scoreless innings against the Rays.
Francisco Liriano is expected to make his Grapefruit league debut on Friday.
Competition for Center
Carlos Gomez, Jason Pridie and Denard Span are all involved in the 3 man competition for the starting center field job. Gomez seemed to be the favorite coming into spring training, but all three are getting an equal opportunity to prove themselves. Here are each of their stats so far. Keep in mind that Span was 2-3 in today’s rained out game, which isn’t included in the official spring stats.
| Player | AB | AVG | BB | SO | SB |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jason Pridie | 9 | .333 | 0 | 3 | 1 |
| Carlos Gomez | 8 | .273 | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Denard Span | 7 | .286 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
Defensively it’s tough to draw any conclusions over such a small sample of games and having not actually watched an inning of spring ball yet. However, Gomez has been mentioned a couple times in the media for making good plays in center.
The stats aren’t so much as important as the fact that all three are getting even playing time. It still seems to be anyone’s job at this point.
