We Have a Stadium May 19th, 2006 at 2:12 pm
A conference committe has approved the Twins stadium bill. The bill still has to go the full house and senate for a vote, but it’s expected that the votes are there. The bill is similar to the original bill passed by the house which calls for a Hennepin County 0.15 percent sales tax (without the requirement of a referendum). The plan is for an open-air stadium in the downtown warehouse district.
The Twins now have a few seasons to get their ducks in a row so we can watch a 2010 pennant race in a brand new outdoor ballpark. For a long time I really wanted to see a retractable roof, but after some thought I really think the the open air facility is a better way to go. A retractable roof requires high walls to support the roof tracks and takes away a lot of the opennes that outdoor stadiums bring. Retractable roof fields often feel like you’re inside even when the roof is open. We’ll see a perfect example this weekend in Milwaukee.
