Twins win opener vs. Tampa Bay
It looked the Twins might have been on the verge of giving up another lead when Livan Hernandez allowed 2 runs in the sixth, tying the ball game. Livan allowed 5 runs (3 earned) through six innings for his worst start of the season. However, unlike the previous two nights, the bullpen was able to get the job done. Dennys Reyes, Juan Rincon and Joe Nathan put together 3 scoreless innings and the Twins were able to add one run in the eighth inning on a Mike Lamb sacrifice fly for the win.
Game Notes
- Carlos Gomez had been mediocre since making a big splash in the opening week of the season. He did, however have 2 singles and 2 SB on Wednesday night.
- Joe Mauer's slump is officially over. He picked up 3 singles and an RBI to bring his season average back to .300.
- Delmon Young stole his 4th base of the season. He had just 10 all of last season, a total he is on pace to smash.
Looking ahead
Boof Bonser will try to build off the nice start he had on Saturday night in Kansas City where he tossed 6 shutout innings. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the bitter cold weather on his side this time. The Twins will face Jason Hamel (0-1, 4.15 ERA) who is also coming off a nice start against Baltimore.
