Twins win first series of season

The Twins followed up Friday night's improbable, Jason Kubel induced, comeback win with a solid victory on Saturday night. Big innings in the fifth and sixth helped the Twins to a 9-2 victory--their biggest win of the season. The win locked up a series victory against the Los Angeles Angels for the team's first series win of the season.

Kevin Slowey rebounded nicely from a shaky start to the season. After allowing 5 runs in each of his first two starts, Slowey held the Angels to just 2 runs through 7 strong innings. The long ball has been Slowey's achilles heel this year, and Torii Hunter's 2-run shot in the second inning was all the scoring the Angels would do.

Kubel's offensive tear that began on Friday carried over into Saturday night. He came to the plate with bases loaded in the fifth, and hit a 2-run double to put the Twins in the lead for the first time in the game. On top of that, he had 3 other singles to to compile his second 4-hit night in a row. Kubel entered Friday with a .226 batting average and 2 games later is sitting at .366. Other Twins who could use that kind of swing are Carlos Gomez (.125), Joe Crede (.175) and Alexi Casilla (.214).

On the note of struggling players, it's worth pointing out that a couple Twins' bench players have done an admirable job of picking up the slack. Brendan Harris saw starts at 2B the past two games in place of Casilla. In those games he put together 4 hits. Brian Buscher had a 2-4 game on Thursday while Crede had an off day.

The lopsided score late in the game provided the perfect opportunity for new pitcher, Juan Morillo, to get his first action as a Twins. Based on the 1 scoreless inning he pitched in the ninth, I'd say it was a successful debut. According to Gameday, Morillo threw fastballs for 12 of his 13 pitches, with one slider mixed in for the Mike Napoli strikeout. He averaged about 97 mph on the radar gun, with one topping out at 98. The early chatter of him being a hard thrower was certainly accurate.

.500 Sunday?

The Twins have an opportunity to bring their record to .500 (7-7) on Sunday by sweeping the Angels. Glen Perkins, who has been their best pitcher so far, will take on righty Shane Loux. Loux has had 1 start this year, going 5 1/3 against Seattle in what resulted in a no decision in the Angel's 10 inning loss.

The Twins are off on Monday, so a deep start by Perkins would put the bullpen in excellent shape come Tuesday against Boston.
