Twins on favorable side of blowout
The Twins have had a few blowout wins this year, but a majority of the lopsided games this season have come at their expense. On Wednesday night, I was a little worried with Scott Kazmir on the mound for the Tampa Bay Rays. The Twins usually don't fair well against left-handed pitching, and Kazmir has had success against the Twins in a limited number of past starts.
The Twins came out attacking Kazmir early though, with 4 runs right away in the first inning. They added 1 in the third and 3 more in the fourth, which finally ended a rough night for the starter.
Brendan Harris was slotted in the #2 spot of the lineup in place of Alexi Casilla, who dropped to ninth. The move paid off, at least in this game. Harris had 3 hits along with Denard Span and Justin Morneau, who surrounded him in the lineup.
The Twins have again managed to get their record to .500, putting them 1/2 game behind the 3-way tie for first involving Chicago, Detroit and Kansas City. I said a couple weeks ago that if the Twins can play .500 ball until Joe Mauer returns it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Well, Mauer is back in the Twin Cities and set to return to a .500 ballclub that is potentially only one calendar day away from being atop the division.
Mike Redmond had an MRI yesterday on his sore shoulder that he limited his playing time over the past week. The Twins will delay Mauers activation to Friday, so they can buy some time to get the results and make a roster move accordingly. Jose Morales was thought to be the guy that would be sent down, but now it's possible the Twins could put Redmond on the DL. They may also go with 3 catchers for a while and demote Casilla, Carlos Gomez or Brian Buscher.
Zach Greinke pitched last night for the Royals and gave up his first 2 ER of the season to put his ERA at 0.50. This is good new because it means the Twins won't have to face Greinke this weekend. If you're not familiar with the personal struggles Greinke faced on his way to becoming a major league star, this comparison with Josh Hamilton is worth reading.
Typically when someone is being loaded onto a cart with a possible neck injury, you want to refrain from cracking jokes. Matt Vasgersian clearly has a different opinion. Fortunately Brade Hawpe is ok and could be back in the Rockies lineup as soon as tomorrow.
