Twins improve to 2-1
For the second straight night, the Twins bullpen can be given a lot of credit for the win. Kevin Slowey got a bit roughed up, allowing 5 runs through six innings. He allowed 9 hits, 2 of which were homeruns, but walked none. The bullpen has been good the past couple nights, but Twins starters can't keep forcing them to pitch 3 or 4 innings a night. Last night Craig Breslow, Jesse Crain and Joe Nathan combined to allow just 1 hit and 1 walk in 3 innings.
Justin Morneau busted out of his 2 game funk and drove in 3 RBI. He homered in the first inning to drive in two, and later doubled to tie the game in the fifth. Jason Kubel drove him in for the game winning run the next at-bat.
Game Notes
Denard Span continues to eliminate any doubt that was caused by his slow spring. He hit his first homer of the season and drew another walk, his 3rd of the season.
Delmon Young was again the odd man out in the 4-man outfield rotation.
Joe Nathan recorded his first save of the season, and 200th of his career.
As Mike Redmond rests his sore groing, Jose Morales again got the start at catcher. He was 0-3. Redmond said yesterday that he believes he can be back for Thursday's game. However, it might make more sense to rest him as long as possible to prevent a more serious injury that might cause him to join Joe Mauer on the DL.
The Twins now share sole possession of first place in the AL Central. Now they just need to hold that lead for 159 more games.
The fourth and final game of the series begins at 12:10 CT today. Glen Perkins will be sent out opposite Jarrod Washburn. Expect to see Delmon get a start today, against the lefty.
