Twins drop finale to Boston
The big news in baseball on Sunday was the return of Clemens to baseball and the Yankees. In Minnesota, the Yankee's main rival, the Red Sox, were taking care of business against the struggling Twins. While the Yankee fans were getting good news, we were learning that Joe Mauer will head to the 15 day DL with a sore quad muscle that has apparently been bothering him all season.
The loss of Mauer comes at a bad time for the struggling Twins' offense. Rondell White has been out for nearly a month and there's no telling when he'll be back. Michael Cuddyer will hopefully be back when the Twins resume play on Tuesday, but the Twins haven't had much luck with day-to-day injuries (Castillo) this season.
On Sunday, the Twins bats weren't able to get to Schilling until the seventh inning when the bottom of the lineup, starting with Mike Redmond were able to put 3 runs on the board. That was all the Twins would score and they fell short of the 4 runs allowd by Sidney Ponson.
Game Notes
- Ponson allowed 4 runs in 5 1/3 IP on 8 hits and 4 walks. He also made a throwing error on what otherwise could've been a double play ball in the fifth.
- Torii Hunter extended his hit streak to 21 games with an infield single in the sixth. He later got another hit.
- After showing some promise, Jason Kubel is hitless in his last three games and has seen his average drop to .244. Of most concern is that he's still without a homer.
Chris Heintz will join the team in place of Mauer in time for Tuesday's home game against the White Sox. The Twins have an important stretch of baseball coming up with three game series against Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland.
