Twins draft Ben Revere June 7th, 2007 at 6:37 pm
The Twins drafted Ben Revere as their first pick (28th overall) of the 2007 amateur draft. He’s straight out of Lexington Catholic HS in Kentucky and is described as a speedy guy with a light bat.
This might be unfair, but he sounds like another Denard Span. Span is currently batting .228 in 208 at bats at AAA Rochester and after all the hype he received as being Torii Hunter’s replacement, it seems unlikely that he’ll ever be a regular player. Each player is different, so there’s no reason to lose hope, but with the lack of success the Twins have had producing talented bats, I thought they should have gone a different direction.
ESPN’s Keith Law had the following comment on the pick.
Revere is my choice for the worst pick of the first round. The Twins had multiple opportunities to get him later. He has a low ceiling. They’ve taken players like this before – Denard Span and Matt Moses come to mind – and they’ve been unable to develop them. He’s like 5-foot-9 outfielder who can run. Source: ESPN.com
That last sentence clearly slipped by the editor, but I get his point.

Keith,
Yes, the Twins maybe could have gotten Ben in a later round. But so could everyone else!
It's clear that you have never seen him play! He's a converted second baseman who has amazing speed with tons of power. As far as "low ceiling", words are best when someone else eats them! Keep up the work. Nick Champa

I have watched this kid play since he was a freshman in high school. As a freshman, he was the best pure hitter in Kentucky and has only improved his overall game since then.

Keith Law, have you seen this kid play? I have. Revere can do more than just "run." His speed is game changing. There isn't a fly ball he cannot track down and catch. And on the bases, he's scary. Sure, the Twins probably could have taken Revere in round two, but his talent is undeniable. Low ceiling? Look again. — Tim Wiesenhahn
