Tolbert replaces Casilla; rain-shortened loss
Before Wednesday's series opener in Baltimore, the Twins optioned struggling Alexi Casilla to AAA Rochester. Casilla hasn't been able to rebound at the plate since returning from the DL late last year after tearing a tendon in his right thumb. His defensive play has also been spotty, and his costly error in Detroit on Tuesday was probably the last straw.
Matt Tolbert was recalled to replace Casilla on the roster. Tolbert and Brendan Harris are expected to split the time at second base.
On Wednesday night, after a short rain delay, the game started with a rough first inning for Kevin Slowey. He allowed 3 runs in the first inning, but then held the Orioles scoress for two innings until the rain caused another delay.
The game was able to resume until the sixth inning, which was enough to make it official. The Twins lost their second rain-shortened game of the season, this time by a score of 4-1.
Game Notes
- Joe Mauer had the night off. Mike Redmond had 2 singles in the game.
- Carlos Gomez started in CF and was 1-2.
- Slowey took his first loss of the season. He's now 4-1, but that record isn't an accurate depiction of how he's pitched this year. He's struggled to a 5.50 ERA and a .328 batting average against him.
Looking Ahead
The Twins will complete the 2-game series tonight in Baltimore, then head home to face the Seattle Mariners. Glen Perkins gets the start tonight againt Brad Bergessen, who is 1-0 with a 5.17 ERA through 3 starts with the Orioles.

Tolbert's been really hot this past week too, so Minnesota's getting a guy while he's hot. Even the outs he made lately have been barely outs...like a fly ball to the outfield wall, or a great defensive play is needed to catch a line drive so it doesn't end up with him on 2nd.
