Thoughts about a narrow victory
Joe Nathan blew his first save of the season by giving up a leadoff home run to Ben Zobrist in the ninth inning. Gleeman suggested that perhaps Nathan isn't getting enough work. It's hard to disagree. Nathan has pitched just 7.0 innings all season. The only player that's been on the active roster all season and pitched fewer innings is Craig Breslow. Nathan is the highest paid member of the bullpen, and should be used more often.
Although Francisco Liriano couldn't get his first win of the season, he had his best outing of the season, allowing 2 runs through 6.2 innings.
Jose Mijares pitched well in the setup role last night. After allowing a leadoff walk, he struck out the side.
Jose Morales has now starting 3 straight games as catcher and 6 of the last 8. Part of hit may have to do with Mike Redmond not being real healthy right now, but Jose's .375 batting average must have something to do with it as well. Unfortunately today's series finale with Tampa Bay will probably be his last game before Joe Mauer returns on Friday.
The Twins grounded into 3 double plays and left 9 men on base last night. In other words, a little timely hitting could have completed avoided the ninth inning blown save and need for a comeback.
The Rubber Game
The Twins have their work cut out for them against tough lefty Scott Kazmir today. Nick Blackburn will try to keep the Rays off the board. He's coming off a fine start in Cleveland over the weekend.
