That's one way to end a losing streak
The Twins snapped their worst losing streak of the season--6 games--on Thursday in spectacular fashion.
The game was quickly put away after they scored 7 runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by Michael Cuddyer's 3-run home run. The Twins continued to pile on the runs as the game went on, eventually ending with a 20-1 victory.
The Twins lost 4 games in New York by a combined 5 runs. A 19 run surplus only earned them 1 win in this game. They lost the series to the White Sox 2 games to 1.
The offensive explosion overshadowed a great Nick Blackburn start. He allowed just 4 hits through 7 shutout innings. He has been the Twins' most successful starter so far. Through 9 starts (56 1/3 IP) he's 3-2 with a 3.83 ERA.
Joe Mauer hit a grand slam in the sixth inning for his 8th HR of the season. Last year he hit just 9 homers in 536 at-bats. This year it's taken him only 72 at-bats to reach 8. Maintaining the torrid pace he's on now would put him near 50 HR on the season. While that's unlikely, it seems very possible that he could end up in the mid 20's, which was always said to be his potential. His career high came in 2006 when he hit 13.
Matt Tolbert hit his first career home run, which came in the 3-run variety in the seventh inning.
Nick Punto was the only member of the starting lineup who didn't have at least 1 hit or walk. He was 0-5 with 3 strikeouts, but did reach a couple times on an error and a fielder's choice. Punto is putting up an atrocious line of .193/.295/.211.
