Spring Update March 23rd, 2008 at 9:36 pm
The Twins open the regular season in just a week and it won’t be long before we have a clear picture of what exactly the team will look like at the Metrodome on March 31st.
Glen Perkins was sent to the AAA camp after having a rough spring. He’ll be a starter there, which may actually prove to be more beneficial to Perkins if his ultimate goal is to be a starter in the majors. The Twins are expected to make additional cuts on Monday.
Joe Nathan and the Twins are reportedly close to reaching an agreement on a 4-year contract extension. If that’s the case, it would keep Nathan a Twin through his age 38 season.
The Twins were leaning toward sending Francisco Liriano to AAA to get some work in to start the season. However, he pitched 4 no-hit innings (2 walks, 5 K’s) against Baltimore on Sunday, which has apparently bought him one more start to prove he belongs in the rotation. If Liriano doesn’t make the rotation, it would open a spot for Phillip Humber or Nick Blackburn. Of course, Scott Baker is also still a question mark with his spring lat muscle strain and his recent case of the flu.
