Spring training is 2 months away December 17th, 2006 at 11:29 am
In just a couple short months pitchers and catchers will be reporting to Ft. Myers, FL to kick off the 2007 spring training. If the Twins don’t find a #2 starter before by then, then this could be a pretty dissapointing offseason, with Jeff Cirillo being the only noteworthy signing–and he’s not even a starter.
On Friday, Buster Olney ran down the top needs for the contenders and to no surprise the Twins were on the list in need of a starter.
But don’t be surprised if the Twins look to sign a cheap veteran starter from the surplus pile that includes Joel Pineiro, Tony Armas, Mark Redman, Shawn Estes, Tomo Ohka and others, or maybe trade for Jon Lieber; they need somebody to step up.
At this point I’d be happy to get one of those guys, however I don’t think either of them is a quality #2 starter. The Twins need someone though. They can’t head into 2007 relying on Carlos Silva and a trio of unproven youngsters to fill out the rotation after Santana.

Pineiro would be a risk. His numbers have gotten worse year-by-year for the past 3 or 4 years.
Sadly, I might rather have Lohse than either of the pitchers mentioned above.

I'd like to have Joel.
