Speculating on the Opening Day Roster

Published: Mar 29, 2009 6:08 PM

The Twins have just a handful of players to cut prior to heading north for the start of the season (one week from tomorrow), so there's a pretty clear picture of what the roster will look like when the Twins host Seattle on April 6th.

The currrent roster is as follows:

Pitchers

  • Luis Ayala
  • Scott Baker
  • Nick Blackburn
  • Boof Bonser
  • Craig Breslow
  • Jesse Crain
  • Brian Duensing
  • Matt Guerrier
  • Phillip Humber
  • Jason Jones
  • Francisco Liriano
  • Jose Mijares
  • Joe Nathan
  • Glen Perkins
  • Kevin Slowey

Catchers

  • Drew Butera
  • Joe Mauer
  • Joese Morales
  • Mike Redmond

Infield

  • Brian Buscher
  • Alexi Casilla
  • Joe Crede
  • Brendan Harris
  • Justin Morneau
  • Nick Punto
  • Matt Tolbert

Outfield / DH

  • Michael Cuddyer
  • Carlos Gomez
  • Denard Span
  • Delmon Young
  • Jason Kubel

I count 31 players there, so how will it be dwindled down to 25? First, it's likely that Mauer will start the season on the DL, so that's an easy one. The Twins will need 2 catchers, so with Redmond being the starter, it's between Morales and Butera. The speculation has been that Butera will get the nod, for his defensive superiority, so that rules out Morales. That puts us at 29.

Concerning pitchers, Gardy originally said he only wanted to bring 11 up north, however since then Bonser was lost for the season, so it's not clear how that will affect the number of pitchers. Most likely to get cut are:

  • Jason Jones
  • Brian Duensing
  • Jose Mijares

Mijares was great in his stint in the majors last fall, but has failed to impress this spring. I'm confident we'll see him in the bigs this summer, but probably not to start the season. Those three names and Bonser bring us down to 11 pitchers.

To throw another twist into things, R.A. Dickey is a non-roster invitee, who pitched today for the Twins. He's a knuckleballer, so he could add another element to the pitching staff. If the Twins decide to go with 12 pitchers, Dickey seems like the likely favorite. The race for the 12th spot will likely come down to he and Mijares.

Of course, there's still a week of spring training to play, so things can change in a hurry.
