Silva's chances are slipping March 25th, 2007 at 11:48 am
Everyone knows that Carlos Silva is coming off a horrible season. While there are still a fair number of delusional people that think he’ll magically turn it around, I think most people that follow the Twins regularly knew in the back of their minds that the Twins had probably wasted $4.5 million dollars when they opted to bring back Silva for 2007. Even with my highly negative view towards Silva, I still thought it was almost certain he’d start out the season in the rotation, but that’s starting to look much less likely.
The Twins in recent years have tended to go with the veteran over the rookie when possible (e.g. Tony Batista, Juan Castro). I expected the same mistake this year with guys like Silva, Ramon Ortiz and Sidney Ponson. To an extent it makes sense. You can’t simply send those guys to the minors and call them back up if plan B also fails, and they make a little too much money to just release them on a whim.
Silva will likely get another chance, and unless he completely falters like he did yesterday, he’ll probably start out the season in the rotation. If he doesn’t make the rotation, he would likely still be brought north as a member of the bullpen (and no, the bullpen doesn’t need the help). Glen Perkins has been sent to AAA, so Matt Garza is currently the 6th man.
Ramon Ortiz has definitely earned a spot in the rotation this spring (and he has a guaranteed contract), so I wouldn’t mind starting out the season with:
- Johan Santana
- Boof Bonser
- Ramon Ortiz
- Matt Garza
- Sidney Ponson
…as long as Ponson is on a really short leash.
